The employees at Maine Heritage Weavers know how to weave luxurious matelasse throws and bedspreads in popular vintage Jacquard designs. Most of them worked for the legendary Bates Fabrics and Bates of Maine before the textile giant closed its doors. Many of them are 3rd or 4th generation textile mill workers, taught from their parents and grandparents their skilled craft.

When Bates closed, they were determined to continue weaving high quality bedspreads. Matelasse styles Abigail Adams and Queen Elizabeth are two of the designs woven by Maine Heritage Weavers in both bedspread and throw sizes. Both are from their popular vintage matelasse collection and treasured favorite designs.

Another popular design is Heritage, available in coverlet and bedspread sizes as well. Heritage's matelasse design of repeating leaves and circles are also woven in standard coverlet sizes with pom-pom fringe. Matching shams and throws are available as well as custom sizes to accommodate thicker mattresses.

Most of the employees of Maine Heritage Weavers began their careers as Bates employees.

One style, Queen Elizabeth, is an authentic vintage reproduction bedspread of an original handwoven masterpiece dating back to the first Elizabethan Era before becoming popular in Colonial America. Elegant center medallion and flowers woven in an intricate "puffed" pattern give grace and clarity to this classic design. It is woven in solid white and antique colors and two-tone colors include: french blue/antique, white/antique (linen), sage/natural and wedgewood blue/white.

Heritage is another of our popular matelasse designs. Heritage, features a repeat pattern of circle and leaf design and is also available in standard coverlet sizes with pom-pom fringe. It is also available in bedspread and throw sizes in many color combinations.

Martha Washington's Choice chenille throws are woven with soft cotton at Maine Heritage Weavers in Lewiston, Maine by former employees of Bates Fabrics.  

Formerly named "George Washington's Choice", Martha Washington's Choice is still one of the most popular vintage chenille woven designs. Martha Washington's Choice is also woven into both coverlet and bedspread sizes with matching pillow shams.

George Washington chose the original of this design for his bride. The original weave, older than Christianity, was lost when textile machinery replaced skilled weavers. Bates Fabrics had recaptures this weaving art and former employees continue this tradition at Maine Heritage Weavers.

Many brides during the 1950s received bedspreads in this pattern. Throws, especially these USA woven vintage throws, make wonderful anniversary presents. Available in white or antique, this design is also available in standard coverlet sizes with pom-pom fringe and bedspread sizes with string fringe. Free fabric swatches are available. Custom sizes are offered to accommodate thicker mattresses.
