These luxury woven cotton vintage throws are manufactured on looms by skilled craftsmen and women. Many worked for the former Bates Fabrics and the company is located in one of the buildings that used to house the famous bedding textile company.

Martha Washington's Choice woven throws are manufactured with the highest quality cotton at Maine Heritage Weavers in Lewiston, Maine by former employees of Bates Fabrics.

Also remembered as George Washington's Choice, Martha Washington's Choice is still one of the most popular vintage candlewick (terry-loop) designs. Martha Washington's Choice is also woven into bedspread and coverlet sizes with matching pillow shams (standard and king size) in addition to throws.

George Washington chose the original of this design for his bride. The original weave, older than Christianity, was lost when textile machinery replaced skilled weavers. Bates Fabrics had recaptures this weaving art and former employees continue this tradition at Maine Heritage Weavers.

The Bates Mill Store opened in the 1950’s by Bates Manufacturing to provide an outlet for luxury bedding and to offer employees a discount. The Bates Mill Store has been selling vintage throws, bedspreads, coverlets and blankets for over 50 years in both candlewick/terry loop and matelasse constructions. Boston Industrialist Benjamin Bates formed Bates Manufacturing, a textile mill in Lewiston, Maine, in 1850. The company, in various forms and under various owners, would continue to do business for almost 150 years, developing a national reputation for its luxurious vintage bedspreads, blankets and other stylish bedding.
