Candlewick Martha Washington's Choice candlewicks are manufactured with the highest quality cotton at Maine Heritage Weavers in Lewiston, Maine. They have been woven in Lewiston, Maine for over half a century.
Remembered as George Washington's Choice, Martha Washington's Choice is still one of the most popular vintage candlewick (terry-loop) designs. It is also woven in coverlet sizes with vintage pom-pom fringe and throw sizes.
George chose the original of this design for his bride. The original weave, older than Christianity, was lost when textile machinery replaced skilled weavers. Bates Fabrics had recaptures this weaving art and former employees continue this tradition at Maine Heritage Weavers. Many brides during the 1950s received bedspreads in this pattern. Throws, especially luxury USA woven throws, make wonderful anniversary presents.

The employees at Maine Heritage Weavers know how to weave luxurious matelasse throws and bedspreads in popular vintage Jacquard designs. Most of them worked for the legendary Bates Fabrics and Bates of Maine before the textile giant closed its doors. Many of them are 3rd or 4th generation textile mill workers, taught from their parents and grandparents their skilled craft.
When Bates closed, they were determined to continue weaving high quality bedspreads. Matelasse styles Abigail Adams and Queen Elizabeth are two of the designs woven by Maine Heritage Weavers in both bedspread and throw sizes. Both are from their popular vintage matelasse collection and treasured favorite designs.
Another popular design is Heritage, available in coverlet and bedspread sizes as well. Heritage's matelasse design of repeating leaves and circles are also woven in standard coverlet sizes with pom-pom fringe. Matching shams and throws are available as well as custom sizes to accommodate thicker mattresses.
In addition to throws throws, Maine Heritage Weavers manufactures lxury bedding include coverlets, bedspreads, throws and blankets in Lewiston, Maine. Both chenille and matelasse designs are machine-washable and will not fade nor shrink more than 3 percent due to the high quality of materials used.
